Sylvia Earle

Sylvia Earle is an American marine biologist. In 1988 she was named as Hero for the Planet by Time Magazine. She spent many hours diving in oceans and observing underwater organisms such as algae and fish. What is more, she headed many scientific expeditions.

She is not a scientist who locks herself in a laboratory and spends hours isolated from the world. Sylvia loves volatility and beauty of wild nature. She couldn't study a fish closed in an aquarium but is keen on doing it diving in a cold, dangerous ocean.

One night Sylvia wore a special wetsuit and dove 10 kilometers away from the coast without a guy rope. And she went deeper than anybody else before, 381 meters in depth.

She is involved in many pro-environmental actions and has publihed a dozen of books concerning marine biology and underwater explorations.

People ask: Why should I care about the ocean? Because the ocean is the cornerstone of earth's life support system, it shapes climate and weather. It holds most of life on earth. 97% of earth's water is there. It's the blue heart of the planet — we should take care of our heart. It's what makes life possible for us. We still have a really good chance to make things better than they are. They won't get better unless we take the action and inspire others to do the same thing. No one is without power. Everybody has the capacity to do something.
